ONCOLOGICAL PREVENTION

In order to reduce the risk of cancer, the best way to do so is through prevention. There are several ways to prevent different types of cancers, such as leading a healthy lifestyle, protecting yourself from the sun and from substances known to cause cancer, or getting vaccinated.

But, as the National Cancer Institute says, cancer is a genetic disease. Put very simply, changes in the genes that control our cells and how they function create cancer.

These genetic changes can be inherited and acquired. If they are inherited, it means that they have been passed down from our parents and if they are acquired they are due to DNA errors during the process of cell division or exposure to substances that damage DNA (e.g. smoking, radiation and UV rays from the sun).

Cancer prevention has a major impact on a person’s life expectancy.
